Comfrey Healing Balm

Comfrey is an incredible plant, known to be amazing for healing all sprains, bruises, muscle and tendon injuries.

Multiple randomized controlled trials have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of comfrey preparations for the topical treatment of pain, inflammation and swelling of muscles and joints in degenerative arthritis, acute myalgia in the back, sprains, contusions and strains after sports injuries and accidents, also in children aged 3 or 4 and over. See my entry on Comfrey in the Herb Index for the details of these trials.

It is such an excellent and speedy wound-healing remedy that it should not be used on deep wounds or lacerations. It could potentially heal the top layer of skin before the bottom layer, resulting in an abscess.

Comfrey Ointment

  1. Roughly chop the root and leaf and place in the bottom of a jar with the Everclear.

  2. Allow to steep for 10 minutes and then add the oil.

  3. Place the herbs in a jar with the alcohol and allow to steep for 10 minutes before adding the oil.

  4. Infuse in a warm oven (75-100 degrees) for 3-4 hours.

  5. Once infused, strain and make into a salve by using a 1:3 ratio of melted beeswax to oil
