Properties : Astringent, Antiviral, Styptic and Tonic.
Culpepper, says 'Self-Heal whereby when you are hurt, you may heal yourself,' and tells us that:
'it is an especial herb for inward or outward wounds. Take it inwardly in syrups for inward wounds, outwardly in unguents and plasters for outward"
Self heal has antiviral properties and can also be used in liver, gall bladder and thyroid problems, it can also increase circulation to the head for ‘hot’ conditions in the throat, lymph glands, tonsils and eye problems, conjunctivitis, eye tiredness & strain, headaches (Burgess, I., Weeds Heal:A working Herbal)
A number of antiviral studies of P. vulgaris extracts have been carried out and compounds active against both HIV and Herpes Simplex Virus have been identified.
An August 2020 Canadian study has provided evidence that P vulgaris has anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity and may be developed as a novel antiviral approach against SARS-CoV-2 infection
